Spin-off de Breaking Bad , Better Call Saul suit une construction en flash-back qui fait de la métamorphose l’objet explicite du récit : il s’agit de raconter comment Jimmy McGill, petit avocat en quête de respectabilité, deviendra Saul Goodman, l’avocat véreux de Breaking Bad , puis Gene, gérant d’une pâtisserie. Dans cet article, nous nous proposons d’étudier conjointement la construction du récit et sa réception pour interroger à la fois les enjeux narratifs et axiologiques de la métamorphose et la variété des approches mobilisées par les spectateurs pour appréhender les identités successives du héros, entre empathie, sympathie, frustrations et recul analytique.
