Abstract
Les données archéologiques concernant le mégalithisme sénégambien ont été considérablement renouvelées depuis une dizaine d’années. En particulier, les travaux de terrain effectués sur la nécropole mégalithique de Wanar révèlent la présence de trois séquences, distinctes et complémentaires, qui ont trait successivement aux pratiques sépulcrales, à la monumentalisation du lieu, et à des pratiques commémoratives. De tels vestiges pourraient-ils rendre compte de rites funéraires semblables à ceux observés chez des populations contemporaines où l’enterrement du défunt, puis la pratique de « grandes funérailles », et enfin la mise en place de son effigie sur l’autel des ancêtres, constituent autant d’étapes parfois très largement différées dans le temps ?
