Abstract
À l’ouverture du Théâtre national populaire (TNP) de Jean Vilar en 1952, le public pouvait découvrir dans la grande salle du Palais de Chaillot L’Avare de Molière mis en scène par Jean Vilar lui-même, mais aussi Nucléa, pièce du poète Henri Pichette, mise en scène par Gérard Philipe. Novatrice par bien des aspects, notamment la scénographie d’Alexander Calder, cette œuvre a été aussi l’objet d’une expérience sonore inédite : l’utilisation de la stéréophonie dirigée, résultat de la collaboration entre le metteur en scène, le compositeur Maurice Jarre et deux ingénieurs de la Radiodiffusion française, Jean-Wilfrid Garrett et José Bernhart. Ce dispositif avait été installé à la faveur de la rénovation de la salle. Les archives des protagonistes, l’abondance des articles de presse et la richesse des questionnaires des spectateurs du TNP permettent de rendre compte des ambitions du projet et des réactions contrastées qu’il a suscitées.
