Abstract
Dans son dernier ouvrage, le politiste et anthropologue James C. Scott revisite la genese profonde des Etats. Poursuivant le travail de Marshall Sahlins (1976), pour qui le neolithique correspondait moins a une economie de subsistance qu’a un âge d’abondance, Scott defend et etaye la these selon laquelle la domestication des plantes et des animaux n’a pas entraine la fixation des populations, ni contribue, en depit de ce que l’on avance souvent a la formation de l’Etat. Celui-ci apparait comme une institution «NsaisonniereN», soumise aux memes aleas climatiques que les cereales qui sont a la base de son pouvoir de coercition fiscale.
