Abstract
Dans Les maisons, Tessa, une femme indécidable, qui est de plus en plus « rattrapée par la sévérité, le jugement et l’intransigeance », est continuellement aux prises avec une ironie destructrice. Pourtant, à certains endroits, l’autodénigrement laisse place à des « moments-voilà-peut-être-tout-ce-qui-existe-désormais », commandés par l’ironie elle-même et qui ont tous en commun la structure familiale, sorte de rempart contre le monde chaotique. C’est ainsi que la maman extrêmement lucide se résout, pour compenser une ironie avilissante, à « laisser se déployer la vie, cette vie qui fait parfois si bien les choses ».
