Abstract
Dans Lettre d’été (Paris, Albin Michel, 2000), Pascale Roze s’adresse à Léon Tolstoï sur le ton d’une « vraie confidence », ce qui lui permet « d’écrire cette expérience-là » (avoir frôlé la mort) qui, sans l’écriture, serait restée secrète, cachée, inexpliquée. Par ailleurs, hantée par des questions sur la mort auxquels son destinataire ne peut répondre, l’auteure tente d’interroger à la fois l’image de lui-même et la philosophie que le grand écrivain a pu élaborer au fil de ses écrits publiés et papiers privés. Cette tentative d’interrogation l’amènera, d’une part, à établir entre eux certaines « correspondances » ou affinités et, d’autre part, à rendre sensible une différence importante d’attitude devant la vie et la mort, différence que sa très grande admiration pour le romancier russe aurait pu censurer. Selon notre hypothèse, pour l’auteure de Lettre d’été, s’adresser à Tolstoï, lui poser ses questions les plus intimes, reviendrait à incarner, par rapport à son destinataire, le semblable et le différent à la fois.
