Abstract
\n Por ocasião das comemorações do Centenário de Independência do Brasil em 1922, o diretor do Museu Paulista, Affonso de E. Taunay, sob orientação do governo do Estado, comissionou o pintor Benedito Calixto para a elaboração de 08 telas a óleo, a partir do Álbum Comparativo da Cidade de São Paulo, 1862 - 1887, de autoria do fotógrafo Militão de Azevedo, para retratar a cidade de São Paulo em sua suposta configuração no período Imperial. A pesquisa objetiva investigar o papel exercido por essas 08 telas na formação da identidade cultural paulista e sua contribuição para a construção de uma história do Brasil sob a ótica da elite paulista do último quartil do século XIX e início do XX e a instrumentalização da fotografia decorrente desta operação. Este objetivo deverá ser atingido por meio da análise do processo de transposição das imagens do meio fotográfico para o pictórico e de seu estudo formal, em particular dos ícones e tipos paulistas exemplares naquele período - o tropeiro e o bandeirante - e como eles influenciaram o imaginário paulista.\n
