Abstract
In 2016, the commemorative programmes of the 500th anniversary of the publication of Thomas More’s Utopia celebrated not only the life of the English humanist but also his work. It is still to be understood, however, if the memory of the past was summoned to make us better understand the past (intransitive memory) or to make us better understand the present and its future possibilities (transitive memory). This study, made under the theoretical umbrella of Memory Studies, examines the commemorative programmes held in the UK, France, and Portugal, underlining the significance of More’s work for the definition of the diachronic identity of those nations.
