Les oeuvres de la Franco-Ontarienne Marguerite Andersen et de l’Acadienne Hélène Harbec, malgré leur importance quantitative et qualitative, ont été très peu étudiées par les chercheurs. Il faut dire que leurs textes de création s’inscrivent dans un contexte de forte décontextualisation et que leur point d’origine (l’Allemagne pour Andersen et le Québec pour Harbec) font d’elles des « étrangères » au sein de leur corpus national respectif, ceci expliquant peut-être cela. Pourtant, les oeuvres d’Andersen et d’Harbec témoignent de thématiques semblables et de rapprochement formels évidents. À la suite des travaux de Lori Saint-Martin et de Béatrice Didier, cet article vise à étudier le rapport à la mère et à son propre rôle de mère des personnages-écrivaines et à examiner la manière dont ces rapports servent de moteur à la création. Les oeuvres des deux auteures proposent une nouvelle solidarité entre femmes qui devient un modèle de vie. Nous voulons mettre en évidence la place problématique du rapport mère-enfant ainsi que les particularités d’une écriture de femmes qui se situent explicitement dans le sillage de la figure tutélaire de Virginia Woolf. Le corpus retenu est composé des oeuvres suivantes : De mémoire de femme ([1982] 2002), Le cahier des absences et de la décision ([1991] 2009), L’orgueilleuse (1998) et La mauvaise mère (2013).
