Une autorité bienveillante semble être un moyen pouvant contribuer à accompagner chaque personne vers l’autonomie individuelle. Cet article considère successivement deux conséquences possibles de l’énoncé de cette thèse. L’une d’entre elles est que cela nous incite à tenter une dialectique de l’autorité et de la reconnaissance (partie 1). Les auteurs s’accordent sur le fait que l’autorité n’existe que si sa légitimité est reconnue. Des penseurs contemporains, dont Taylor, Honneth et Ricoeur, ont réinvesti la notion hégélienne de lutte pour la reconnaissance pour penser le monde social. Quelles articulations envisager entre ces deux logiques ? La difficulté inhérente à l’occupation d’une place d’autorité aujourd’hui est ensuite discutée (partie 2). Nombre de chercheurs en sciences de l’éducation se sont demandé à quelles conditions il était possible d’exercer l’autorité. Notre deuxième partie pose la question de la nécessité, pour celui qui exerce une telle autorité, de prendre également soin de lui-même.
