Abstract
Marcel Rioux retrace ici les hauts faits de Mai 68, né des contestations étudiantes en France. Il compare la situation des étudiants français à celle des étudiants d’ici tout en tenant compte de différents éléments de contexte. Au Québec, les contestations étudiantes frappent certes de plein fouet la société, mais elles mettent également en cause l’Amérique instigatrice de la guerre du Vietnam, le mode de vie nord-américain fondé sur la production et la consommation et les valeurs occidentales. La lutte des Noirs et des femmes aux États-Unis éveille également leur sympathie. Au Québec, les chefs de file semblent adopter une même vision, largement partagée dans les rangs étudiants : le Québec, dominé et colonisé par le reste de l’Amérique du Nord, est dans une position d’infériorité qui doit être renversée à tout prix.Ses analyses, conduites à chaud, amènent Rioux à penser que les contestations étudiantes ont trait à la culture en vigueur dans la société québécoise. Elles mettent en cause, par-delà les régimes économiques et politiques, les valeurs devenues caduques aux yeux des étudiants.
