Abstract
Dans une série de six tragédies romaines montées à Paris entre 1657 et 1669, Thomas Corneille examine d’abord l’effondrement de la tyrannie, ensuite plusieurs exemples du maniement du pouvoir politique : comment gagner ou regagner un trône, la façon de s’y maintenir, le problème de la primogéniture, enfin la poursuite de la résistance. Ces intrigues, calquées sur des épisodes de l’histoire républicaine ou impériale, ont exigé à la fois des suppressions (tant pour les besoins de la dramaturgie qu’à cause des bienséances) et la création de plusieurs personnages surtout féminins. Si ces jeunes femmes ont pour objet de renforcer l’intérêt sentimental dont raffolait le public, elles servent également à définir les luttes politiques et à justifier les actions que demande la quête du pouvoir.
