013 Pelvic Floor Biometry Assessed Using 3D Translabial Ultrasound in Women with Vulvodynia Submitted to Physical Therapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract
Vulvodynia is a prevalent chronic vulvar pain which has strong negative effects over quality of life of women and their partners. Pelvic floor muscles (PFM) hypertonicity is known to play an important role in its pathophysiology. For many years, studies investigating whether physical therapy was efficient on changing muscle status of PFM of women with vulvodynia used digital and electromyography assessments, with inconsistent findings. The four-dimensional translabial ultrasound (4D-TLUS) is proven to be efficient on measuring biometry of PFM. Recent studies found that biometric measures of PFM of women with vulvodynia differ from those of healthy controls. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence of whether physical therapy is effective on promoting changes on PFM of women with vulvodynia. This knowledge would contribute to improve knowledge about the mechanism throughout physical therapy is effective for treating women with vulvodynia, and to guide future studies aiming to increase effect of treatment for this disabling condition.
