Abstract
Le Québec a changé et c'est un écrivain français d'origine belge, Michel van Schendel, arrivé au Québec en 1952, qui décrit cette situation avec lucidité et émotion dans le texte final de sa rétrospective poétique De l'œil et de l'écoute (1980) : " L'histoire ici entendue, n'est pas de n'importe qui, n'importe quoi. Celui, ici, qui écrit est un immigrant. Écrivant, il s'en souvient, il s'en empare, il produit sa condition. C'est pourquoi il écoute. C'est pourquoi il écrit. Et il revendique cette écriture. Il réclame qu'elle ait place en contravention des lassitudes fermées de la conformité...Les dissonances constatées sont la forme nécessaire de cette écriture. La divagation l'est aussi : en une telle condition, elle est le plus court chemin de l'écoute " . Ce que van Schendel met à l'écoute, c'est le singulier de chacun, face à d'autres singularités, parce que l'étranger ne l'est pas seulement par rapport aux Québécois, il l'est aussi par rapport aux autres immigrants qu'il côtoie dans la rue ou avec qui il doit composer dans sa vie quotidienne. \nDans le renouvellement des données de l'écriture québécoise, ce texte de van Schendel trace, d'une voix inquiète, un tableau des forces en jeu de la question sociale, aux prises avec des transformations qui étaient inimaginables avant. En cela, il annonce les vers de l'italo-québécois Marco Micone, dans Speak What : " Nous sommes cent peuples venus de loin/Pour dire que vous n'êtes pas seuls " .
