Dans le cadre des guerres d’expansion coloniale, les armées occidentales ont parfois connu la défaite. Au-delà de l’événement, la mémoire de ces batailles a été investie d’un sens politique par des acteurs, dans le passé comme de manière contemporaine. Ces batailles ont été vécues différemment dans les sociétés des protagonistes, et les pratiques de commémoration anciennes et présentes comportent de grandes différences, selon leur histoire propre, mais aussi les enjeux géopolitiques contemporains du contrôle des lieux de mémoire. Comment ces événements ont-ils été mobilisés dans la construction de la mémoire historique ? La recherche repose sur l’analyse d’un corpus de sources bibliographiques, médiatiques et numériques. L’article, après un retour théorique, présente le traitement mémoriel des sites de six batailles pour proposer une typologie, qui souligne l’importance mais aussi la diversité des enjeux de pouvoir sur les processus de traitement mémoriel de ces sites de batailles passées.
