Abstract
The quest for same-sex marriage is generally considered to be a fundamental rights issue in Canada. A study of efforts by gays and lesbians in Quebec demonstrates that the evolution of minority rights is less linear that it appears. A transformation in norms is the result of multiple factors and cross-influences. These findings challenge the slippery slope theory according to which legalization of same-sex marriage would open the door to polygamy or to multiple-partner marriages. Our research on recognition of gay or lesbian marriages in Canada contextualizes the importance of fundamental rights in the transformation of institutions such as marriage.
