Generation of structural information from polymers and copolymers using tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract
Data which shows that a block copolymer may be sequenced by means of mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry are presented. Average molecular weight and oligomer distribution information was obtained for the methyl methacrylate/butyl methacrylate (MMA/BMA) block copolymer by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. The MALDI-collision induced dissociation spectra from the MMA/BMA block copolymer contain distinctive peaks that are indicative of the structure. It include peaks that may be used to deduce information about the end group structure and the polymer sequence. It should be possible to differentiate between block and random acryclic copolymers by means of tandem mass spectrometry.
