C’est dans une vocation de mainteneur du patrimoine protestant qu’a été créée en 1979 la société d’histoire du protestantisme de Montpellier. Section locale de la société de l’histoire du protestantisme français, fondée en 1852, l’association montpelliéraine a su développer en plus de trente‑cinq ans d’existence une activité riche : conférences, colloques, sauvegarde des archives et du patrimoine.
