The contribution of the psychodynamic approach to the prevention of psychopathology

Abstract
Understanding and goals of psychodynamic psychotherapy in its different varieties, includes a special approach combining psychoanalysis, psychiatry and group dynamics. Such an approach may have a significant contributing role to prevention of psychopathology. In line with this, effects of psychodynamic psychotherapy including psychodynamic group psychotherapy on primary, secondary and tertiary prevention will be outlined. These effects will be discussed on the ground of a comprehensive and integrative health concept referring to the WHO Ottawa Charter of health promotion, including positive health, personal and social resources, and resilience. It may be argued that long-term and stable prevention of psychopathology may be possible through the conceptual and practical integration of prevention, health promotion and psychotherapy in the sense of profound personality change and identity development (and not only symptom reduction), strengthening the person's abilities, social resources as well as facilitation of service utilization (e.g., access to medical and psychosocial care).
