Abstract
The term 'suburbia' is often tentatively applied to the ambiguous spatial forms and communities of the post-war era in North America and Europe, but it is arguable that the paucity of precise terminology (in German and in French, as well as in English) reflects a lack of understanding of these urban forms. This presentation reports on a master's thesis in architecture, currently underway, that pits concepts culled from a review of the contemporary literature on 'city' and 'suburb' against the findings of a set of interviews with residents of Québec suburbs dating from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The professional and intellectual discourse is compared and contrasted with the image, perceptions, and representations of these residents of 'suburbia revisited' using the concept of settlement-identity
