Abstract
This paper explores the question of the participation of parents in the sexual education of their child with an intellectual disability (ID), based on a literary review of the subject. A first observation reveals the difficulties encountered by parents when facing their role of sex educators. Many parents are concerned about this issue, but do not consider themselves competent enough to help their child assume a fulfilling sex life. Different forms of parenting support are later presented in order to help parents engage actively and effectively in a sex education process with their child. Among considered resources, a parent training based on data retrieved from the literature is proposed by the authors. This training is developed (in Canada) according to a perspective based on a positive approach of self and child, mediatized by professional health care workers and involving parents, children and professionals. This approach supports a holistic view of sexuality as well as adult education involving other parents. Following this, practical recommendations aiming to promote the progress of this parental training experience are formulated.
