Pronóstico hidrometeorológico en la cuenca del Río Reventazón, Costa Rica

Abstract
Se desarrolló un sistema de pronóstico hidrometeorológico estacional continuo de largo plazo (6 meses), y de probabilidad de excedencia, para el acumulado de lluvia de la época lluviosa (mayo-noviembre) en la parte media-alta de la cuenca del río Reventazón donde están ubicadas las plantas hidroeléctricas Río Macho y Cachí, siguiendo la metodología empleada por Piechota y colaboradores (2001), que utiliza el análisis discriminante lineal y las probabilidades Bayesianas en el proceso. Se realizó un análisis exploratorio de teleconexiones entre las variables hidroclimáticas de la cuenca (29 estaciones de lluvia y 6 de caudal) y diferentes índices climáticos representativos de la atmósfera y de los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico, para estudiar su potencialidad como predictores. Se eligió el índice climático Oscilación Multidecenal del Atlántico del trimestre marzo-mayo como predictor. Se evaluaron los procesos de calibración y de validación cruzada con el índice estadístico error lineal en el espacio de probabilidad (LEPS SK en inglés), el cual demostró que el modelo planteado tiene mayor habilidad para predecir los terciles alto y bajo de lluvias y además, demostró ser mejor que utilizar sólo la climatología. Se planteó un esquema de pronóstico estacional para eventos extremos húmedos y secos que utiliza los índices AMO y El Niño con potencial para proyectar mejor los años húmedos extremos. Los resultados de esta investigación pretenden contribuir con información valiosa para la toma de decisiones, con diferentes niveles de riesgo, en el manejo óptimo del recurso hídrico y en la generación de electricidad en la cuenca.
