A nivel mundial, la papa (Solanum tuberosum) constituye uno de los cultivos mas importantes para la alimentacion humana. En anos recientes se ha detectado la bacteria Ralstonia solanacearum en algunas regiones de Estados Unidos (EUA) y Canada, la cual provoca la enfermedad denominada marchitez bacteriana en el cultivo de la papa. Esta bacteria ocasiona una pudricion en el tuberculo, tallos y hojas de este cultivo y tiene la particularidad de diseminarse por semilla. Dada la cercania con los EUA y Canada, y siendo Mexico un pais importador de semilla de esos paises, la probabilidad de una eventual introduccion de esta enfermedad es significativa, especialmente en areas con amplias extensiones de papa. La papa es una de las principales hortalizas producidas en Mexico. En el ano del 2013, la produccion nacional de papa supero las 2,000,000 de toneladas. Este manuscrito presenta una revision de la epifitiologia de Ralstonia solanacearum con el objetivo de divulgar algunos aspectos que auxiliaran a tomar decisiones sobre un manejo adecuado de esta enfermedad.
