Abstract
Alors que l’abondance de l’hydrographie est mentionnée dans de nombreuses sources décrivant le Canada, colons et administrateurs s’accommodent des réalités environnementales de la colonie. De fait, dans ses tentatives pour faciliter la circulation fluviale, l’État se heurte à un manque de moyens qui limite les capacités d’aménagement. Contrairement à d’autres territoires français, il concentre son action sur les rivières et, en dépit de l’omniprésence de l’eau, il privilégie l’adaptation des pratiques plutôt que la transformation du milieu. Les mesures de gestion de l’hydrographie révèlent ainsi l’importance des initiatives locales et le contraste entre les volontés politiques affichées et les réalisations concrètes.
