L’article constitue un accompagnement critique de l’étude intitulée « L’immigration italienne dans le Gers », rédigée en 1928 par Alphonse Dupront et restée inédite jusqu’à sa publication en 2018. Écrit de jeunesse du futur grand historien, alors étudiant normalien, elle aborde l’immigration à travers l’enquête de terrain qu’il a réalisée dans sa région d’origine (le canton de Condom). L’approche est caractérisée par cet ancrage territorial, cette proximité à l’objet et ce choix méthodologique. Alphonse Dupront pose un regard ancré dans la géographie physique du milieu rural gascon, mobilise les catégories de son temps tout en développant une approche compréhensive du sujet. Loin des débats inquiets sur les migrations et des théorisations abusives qui entachent bien des textes de cette époque, son étude constitue un jalon tout à fait remarquable au vu de l’historiographie à venir.
