Per molti critici culturali il pendolare è una figura stereotipa della cultura popolare moderna, caratterizzata da un comportamento abituale, irriflessivo, automatico. Legato ad una cintura di sicurezza, nascosto dietro un giornale, immobilizzato all’interno di un vagone del treno, collegato a un telefono cellulare o a un iPod, il pendolare è apparentemente privo di sensazioni, emozioni, di senso del luogo, perennemente intrappolato nel vortice dei flussi translocali. Questa immagine, però, è indubbiamente superficiale.
