Pour lʼauteur, une première rencontre avec Singapour en 1967 a été marquante. En plein démarrage à titre de république nouvellement indépendante, la Cité-État se transformait en vaste chantier dʼinnovations tant économiques et infrastructurelles que sociales et politiques. Ayant pu observer de près pendant un demi-siècle toutes les étapes et les résultats de ce bouleversement quasi permanent, lʼauteur suggère une interprétation de sa logique dʼun point de vue territorial. La manipulation tous azimuts et incessante de tous les repères spatiaux entraînerait une forme dʼaliénation territoriale et contribuerait à lʼadhésion de la population au projet politique des dirigeants de lʼÉtat : transformer le territoire pour transformer la société. De nature diachronique, une dizaine de planches cartographiques sert à illustrer le caractère systématique de cette démarche et de sa valeur explicative.
