L'étude suivante est une étude qualitative des expériences académiques de quatre jeunes adultes ayant des troubles d'apprentissage et des déficiences associées. L'étude examine les modèles et les variations trouvés parmi les participants afin de mieux comprendre leurs expériences de l'école primaire jusqu'aux études postsecondaires. Au moment du recrutement, les quatre participants impliqués dans cette étude étaient inscrits ou récemment diplômés de programmes postsecondaires à Montréal. Ils ont partagé leurs expériences avec des chercheurs en entrevues semi-structurées individuelles. Les données ont été extraites par analyse thématique. Les conséquences des expériences éducatives des participants ont été classées en trois catégories: environnement social, milieu académique et environnement de soutien. Bien que beaucoup de diversité ait été trouvée chez les participants, d'importantes parallèles ont été découvertes. Les participants ont relevé une hausse de difficulté à mesure qu'ils atteignaient des niveaux supérieurs d'éducation en raison d'une plus grande demande académique et d'une augmentation des charges de parcours. Des expériences positives et négatives ont été signalées concernant les éducateurs et les services de soutien. Les éducateurs et le personnel de soutien qui ont prêté attention aux besoins des élèves et qui comprenaient leur handicap ont eu le plus grand impact parmi les étudiants. Enfin, les étudiants ont bénéficié d'une compréhension de leurs propres handicaps, de leurs forces et de leurs besoins, ce qui était très utiles dans les milieux académiques et pour l'autonomie sociale. Cette étude renforci la littérature actuelle en apportant une nouvelle perspective, celle des étudiants eux-mêmes, en plus d'accroître la recherche relative au contexte canadien.
