Abstract
The year-long Commission between the Lancet and the University College London Institute for Global Health identified climate change as the biggest global health threat of the 21st century (Costello et al. 2009). Climatic conditions are interwoven with the well being and sustainability of human societies globally. It is anticipated that the Earth’s average surface temperature is to increase 2–3o C by 2090 and increases of 4–5o C are expected at higher latitudes such as in the geographical locations of northern Canada, Greenland and Siberia (Costello et al. 2009). Temperature changes and associated alterations in precipitation and weather patterns, extremes of flooding and drought, and changes to natural ecosystems are expected to affect billions of people worldwide.
