En 1992-1993, les Forces canadiennes ont participe a la mission de maintien de la paix de l’Onu. Cependant que les troupes canadiennes etaient deployees en Somalie, s’y produisirent certains evenements qui ont entache la reputation des forces militaires canadiennes. Ces evenements comprenaient des coups de feu tires sur des intrus somaliens au camp canadien de Belet Uen et la mort par coups et blessures de l’adolescent Shidane Arone, confie a la garde de soldats du 2e commando du regiment aeroporte du Canada. Dans cet article, l’auteur se concentre sur les contingences de la situation creees par l’experience de l’etrangete, c’est-a-dire la rencontre entre les soldats canadiens et l’environnement africain, et sur la nature de leurs interactions avec la population locale. Les interpretations et l’analyse contenues dans cet article sont fondees sur plus de 50 entrevues approfondies, en plus de l’observation de plusieurs groupes de discussion auxquels ont participe des militaires canadiens de grades tres divers et certains membres de leur famille.
