Cette étude analyse l’interprétation de l’agir de trois jeunes en situation de raccrochage scolaire aux diverses étapes de leur trajectoire, selon les types de discours employés lors des récits autobiographiques. Nous adoptons une typologie de l’interprétation de l’agir selon deux axes (axes de l’agentivité et de la typicalité) et nous analysons la construction de cette interprétation par l’articulation des types de discours. L’analyse révèle les négociations des jeunes avec les normes et les structures sociales, explicitées par le discours théorique ou présentes implicitement dans le discours interactif direct. La narration situe l’individu par rapport aux expériences d’autrui, et le discours interactif rapporté introduit des moments émergents dans la trajectoire ou illustre le fonctionnement typique des institutions. Enfin, le discours interactif direct donne lieu à une négociation de sens avec l’intervieweur pour partager ou généraliser l’expérience. Malgré des positions sociales et scolaires comparables, les jeunes engagent leur responsabilité à des niveaux variables sur l’axe de l’agentivité, d’une adhésion aux normes de responsabilisation et d’autonomie sur le mode de la culpabilité à une mise en défaut de l’institution scolaire par le décrochage.
