Abstract
L’objectif de cet article est de mettre en évidence la pertinence et la richesse d’une comparaison franco-italienne des parlementaires libéraux de la fin du xixe siècle, pour comprendre comment une partie de ces parlementaires prend progressivement ses distances à l’égard du libre-échange et du « laissez-faire » au profit d’une rénovation de l’idéologie libérale. La procédure parlementaire qui aboutit à la promulgation d’une loi des accidents du travail en 1898, tant en France qu’en Italie, après pratiquement deux décennies de débat, offre, à cet égard, un terrain d’approche privilégié pour comprendre cet aggiornamento des parlementaires libéraux. Dans le corps de cet article sont abordés les problèmes de définition des parlementaires libéraux français et italiens en l’absence d’un parti libéral clairement identifié comme tel avant 1914, mais aussi les processus de reconfiguration idéologique à travers la mise en évidence de trajectoires communes des deux côtés des Alpes.
