Este capítulo pretende descrever alguns dos modelos teóricos, conceitos e ques-<br> tões de investigação mais relevantes na área de Aquisição de Segunda Língua<br> (ASL). Começamos por definir os conceitos de língua segunda, língua estrangeira<br> e língua não materna (ver Secção 2) e descrever as principais características que<br> aproximam e distinguem a aquisição de língua não materna da aquisição de lín-<br> gua materna (ver Secção 3). Discutimos depois algumas destas características<br> mais detalhadamente: o efeito da idade de início de exposição à língua (ver Secção<br> 4), o papel dos fatores individuais (ver Secção 5) e a influência do conhecimento<br> linguístico prévio (ver Secção 6). Na Secção 7, descrevem-se alguns aspetos do de-<br> senvolvimento do conhecimento linguístico na língua não materna e, finalmente,<br> na Secção 8, apresenta-se uma breve síntese.
