Cet article envisage de discuter les origines de l’idée à la fois la plus réussie et controversée de Gilberto Freyre : le fait que l’identité brésilienne se définit en termes de mélange ou de métissage, aussi bien physique que culturel. Alors que l’absence d’une identité en conséquence de l’immigration et des mélanges était vue comme problématique par un bon nombre de Brésiliens, Freyre transforme le problème en solution en soutenant que ces croisements ou hybridations étaient précisément la particularité du peuple brésilien. J’essayerai de reconstituer ce qu’on appelle le chemin de Freyre vers la Casa Grande ou la « Maison du Maître », étant donné que l’expression la plus significative de ses idées sur le métissage ressort de son livre Casa Grande e Senzala (en français, Maîtres et esclaves), publié pour la première fois en 1933. En suivant sa trajectoire, je mettrai l’accent sur la tension existant entre les préjugés contre les Noirs et les Métis que Freyre partageait avec l’élite brésilienne et l’émergence d’un nouveau paradigme des rapports raciaux qu’il s’efforçait de créer durant les années 1920.
