Abstract
Si les paysages d’hiver ont fait la fortune d’une certaine tradition artistique du Québec interpellée par les espaces naturels, cet article s’intéresse plutôt à la représentation de l’hiver en ville par des artistes québécois figuratifs avant l’avènement de l’abstraction. Une sélection de leurs œuvres permet de considérer la manière dont ils ont peint les diverses modalités d’adaptation des citadins à l’hiver, ses plaisirs mais aussi ses misères. Enfin, le texte s’interroge sur les conditions mêmes de production de l’œuvre. Car la question se pose: où est l’artiste, où se positionne-t-il pour peindre le froid sans en subir les effets pernicieux?
