Le travail des artistes constitue un objet de recherche peu étudié en sciences sociales, particulièrement en ce qui concerne les conditions d’effectuation du travail et d’emploi. C’est pourquoi notre recherche a pour objectif d’étudier les conditions d’effectuation du travail artistique, c’est-à-dire comment les artistes en arts numériques à Montréal effectuent-ils leur travail en contexte d’organisation par projet et de pluriactivité ? Ce projet se base sur deux axes. Le premier concerne l’organisation du travail par projets qui caractérise le travail artistique, et le second axe concerne le recours contraint à la pluriactivité. L’organisation par projets implique un lien contractuel à court-terme aligné sur la durée du projet et une différenciation à l’interne très marquée. Par conséquent, les artistes adoptent le travail autonome et recourent au portage salarial, c’est-à-dire qu’ils sont assujettis à une forme hybride de salariat pendant la durée du contrat, du projet. En ce qui concerne la pluriactivité, celle-ci recoupe toutes les activités et les sources de revenus que cumulent simultanément les artistes et qui constituent autant de stratégies de socialisation des coûts et des risques. Ces activités peuvent être artistiques, comme la création et la diffusion, para-artistiques, comme l’enseignement ou le travail en milieu culturel, ou non-artistiques. Notre recherche étant de nature qualitative, nous adoptons une approche empirique à partir d’une méthodologie compréhensive et biographique. Nous avons réalisé douze entrevues semi-dirigées centrés sur le parcours de vie des participants.
