Abstract
Crohn disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD incidence in Spain is 6-9 cases per 100,000 individuals and the cost of CD is estimated in 7.722€ per patient each year. This study is based on a literature review of this disease. The classic triad for IBD is diarrhea lasting for more than 4 weeks, weight loss and abdominal pain. However, extraintestinal manifestations and risk factors, such as smoking, diet and infections, might also be taken into account for effective management. Montreal classification and Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) are used to determine the kind of disease and its activity. Health-related quality of life (HQoL) can be assessed using the IBD questionnaire (IBDQ-32 or short version IBDQ-9). The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is useful to evaluate the anxiety and depressive disorders. All of them may be useful in diagnosis, treatment and monitoring the disease. Nursing interventions targeting Primary Health Care are the reception of the patient, adherence to treatment, nutrition, smoking cessation, exercise, vaccination. Knowledge of the Crohn and Colitis Care Units (CCCU) is also important. It entails not only standardized interventions but also individualized care according to each patient and their specific situation
