Abstract
Articulatory practices take place not only within gIven social and political spaces, but between them. (Laclau and Mouffe, 1985: 140, emphases original) The AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP) has been touted as the most radical AIDS organization because of its penchant for disrupting public spaces of civil society (Crimp and Rolston, 1990; Kramer, 1989). So when I began my research on AIDS politics around Vancouver, Canada in January of 1992, the first organization I contacted was its local chapter. I was vaguely aware of the movement&s;s actions in other cities, and I had heard about a few of its demonstrations in the local media. ACT UP seemed to be precisely the form and location of resistance that radical democratic theory (e.g. Mouffe, 1993) had been discussing all too abstractly (Massey, 1995).
