Abstract
The quality of parenting that children receive has an enormous effect on their lives. A Canadian survey interviewed parents of 23,000 children aged under 11 years and concluded that poor parenting practices are strongly associated with relationship and behavioural problems in children. NHS staff needs to remember that the vast majority of parents, no matter what difficulties they are experiencing, feel the same about their children as staff feel about their own children. The definition of parent is wider than biological parent and includes anyone taking responsibility for bringing up a child: step-parent, foster parent and those working with looked after children for a local authority. Despite the overwhelming evidence of the importance of good parenting, most parents receive no training and little support. Home Start and the Thurrock Community Mothers Programme offer effective help from local volunteer befrienders who are trained to offer help to isolated or hard-pressed mothers of children under five years old.
