Abstract
This chapter explores the essential role of politics, the state and technology in achieving transitions towards sustainable development in the area of energy. It focuses on some recent examples of emerging sustainability transitions witnessed in developed countries, with a special focus on: (1) the phase-out of coal in Ontario, Canada; and (2) the turn to electric vehicles in Norway. These cases are examined from a sustainability transition perspective, concentrating on the role of the state and politics in deliberately accelerating energy transitions. It concludes that rapid and decisive societal change can be realized through the mobilization of the powers of state through politics.
