Abstract
William Pitt&s;s first Ministry lasted for seventeen years and three months to become the second longest of the eighteenth century, surpassed only by that of Sir Robert Walpole. When the crisis finally broke in September, it was Pitt&s;s coaxing that finally led the King to agree to British mobilisation in support of Prussian intervention to restore the Orangeists to power. George Grenville explained in 1788, during one of his brother Buckingham&s;s frequent clashes with the King on Irish patronage while Lord Lieutenant, that: The King never went so far as systematic interference during Pitt&s;s first Ministry. The royal equerry Robert Greville was surprised how, during the Regency Crisis, Pitt confined his enquiries about the King&s;s condition to the official channels of the doctors and the Queen, and ignored those like himself who were in constant attendance on the sick Monarch.
