Abstract
Ce mémoire étudie la représentation des communautés culturelles dans l'œuvre de Gabrielle Roy, en particulier dans deux romans et un recueil de nouvelles : Rue Deschambault (1955), Un jardin au bout du monde (1975) et Ces enfants de ma vie (1977). Composés de récits distincts consacrés à divers personnages d'immigrants (ou enfants d'mmigrants), ces trois œuvres brossent un portrait contrasté de l'Ouest canadien dans un pays qui était déjà « multiculturel » avant que le multiculturalisme devienne la politique officielle du Canada. À travers les souvenirs de la narratrice qui sert de truchement à l'auteure à l'époque où elle était jeune fille (Rue Deschambault) puis enseignante (Ces enfants de ma vie), ou par la voix d'un narrateur omniscient (Un jardin au bout du monde), le regard que jette Gabrielle Roy sur la condition des immigrants est à la fois critique et empathique de leur situation économique et sociale. Notre étude s'attache aussi à la condition réservée à la minorité francophone dans l'Ouest canadien, qui la rapproche de celle des immigrants représentés dans l'œuvre de l'écrivaine franco-manitobaine.
