Au Québec, la médiation culturelle gagne en importance comme modalité d’action culturelle, en particulier par les acteurs municipaux et institutionnels. Résultat d’un projet partenarial, cette recherche vise à mieux comprendre les pratiques et les rôles de ceux qui font la médiation culturelle sur un territoire particulier : la Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent (VHSL), une région située au sud-ouest de Montréal. Fondée sur une série d’entretiens et la participation à des rencontres régionales d’une « cellule d’innovation en médiation culturelle », cette contribution s’intéresse en particulier au cas des artistes. Quels rôles leur sont attribués dans les actions en médiation culturelle menées dans la VHSL ? Trois rôles sont ici explorés – celui d’artiste professionnel, d’outil d’interventions menées par d’autres acteurs, ainsi que de travailleur – et lèvent le voile en partie sur l’ambigüité de l’identité professionnelle des artistes médiateurs.
