We study noncompact surfaces evolving by mean curvature flow ( <sc>mcf</sc> ). For an open set of initial data that are <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="upper C cubed"> <mml:semantics> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>C</mml:mi> <mml:mn>3</mml:mn> </mml:msup> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">C^3</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> -close to round, but without assuming rotational symmetry or positive mean curvature, we show that <sc>mcf</sc> solutions become singular in finite time by forming neckpinches, and we obtain detailed asymptotics of that singularity formation. Our results show in a precise way that <sc>mcf</sc> solutions become asymptotically rotationally symmetric near a neckpinch singularity.
