Under the Radar: Chinese SME Owners' Awareness of and Attitudes towards Management Consulting

Abstract
Management/business consultants offer expertise across all managerial areas “including Strategy, Operations, HR, Marketing, Finance, and so on” (Leaman, 2013). Such expertise can often accelerate the growth of a client firm or solve problems that are hindering stability. In North America management consulting is a “mature” industry, therefore opportunities for growth for consulting firms will have to come from emerging markets . However, when it comes to China, adoption of management consulting services has been slow, even for global consulting firms. Our interviews with six owners of Chinese SMEs in Guiyang, Guizhou showed that it is a function of lack of awareness of consulting services, attitudes towards consultants, and the use of preferred substitutes for consultants that fit cultural norms. Our paper extends the literature on management consulting in China and provides recommendations for firms looking to offer management consulting services in China.
