Abstract
Saint Alexandre Sauli de Pierre Puget (1663–1668) est important dans l’histoire de la sculpture génoise pour avoir contribué à introduire un style d’interactivité spatiale romain, mais il donne également un aperçu des interactions complexes entre l’art, la religion et les politiques familiales du début de la Gênes moderne. Les mécènes étaient des membres de la noble famille du modèle, et cette commande faisait partie d’une stratégie visant à promouvoir la sainteté de leur parent. Des personnages bien établis de l’antiquité chrétienne étaient prévus pour les trois autres piliers, dans une approche post-tridentine typique où de nouveaux saints étaient associés à des prototypes plus anciens. Toutefois, cet assemblage est inhabituel, car Sauli n’était pas encore canonisé au moment de l’installation, et plus de soixante-dix ans devraient passer avant sa béatification en 1741. L’inclusion de cet individu parmi une compagnie aussi auguste offre un aperçu de l’utilisation de la sculpture, particulièrement de la rhétorique affective de la présence tridimensionnelle, pour construire l’identité publique d’un nouveau saint.
