Abstract
En este artculo se analizan comparativamente las relaciones cualitativas existentes entre los patrones funcionales de las construcciones progresivas del ingls a lo largo de su desarrollo diacrnico y los procesos de gramaticalizacin en que devienen estas estructuras. Para ilustrar estas relaciones, se presenta el anlisis cualitativo-funcional de una serie de prototipos progresivos extrados del conjunto de corpus York-Toronto-Helsinki-Penn, concretamente, de los gneros textuales por perodo en los que se estima la existencia de estos fenmenos de cambio gramatical. Se lleva a cabo un anlisis, segn el conjunto de rasgos que caracterizan estas construcciones en el ingls actual, que sugiere la presencia de tres gradientes progresivos: un gradiente estructural, uno funcional y otro de cambio gramatical.
