Abstract
Abstract Censuses of population refer to the official procedures of counting the members of a population in a specific territory at a particular time, and collecting various types of information about them in order to assess the size and the characteristics of that given population. Censuses of population date back to ancient Egypt and China and to the Roman Empire but took their modern form over the last few centuries in and through the processes of colonialism and modernization. Results of censuses of population are (supposed to be) used to formulate public and social policies and to design political and administrative institutions. Censuses of population often create social unrest and political controversy for several reasons; such issues have been recently addressed by an emerging body of critical scholarship.
