Exploration and exploitation are two generic strategies of firm adaptation to their environment. However, the effectiveness and reliability of these approaches in different contexts are not fully understood. Employing the multiplicative heteroscedasticity regression model on the data from 500 Russian SMEs (survey supplemented with objective financial data), we assess the distinct impacts of exploration and exploitation activities on the distribution of firm performance (mean and variability effects) during the period of recovering from the economic downturn. We also examine the moderating impact of the firm-level crisis severity. We find unique evidence of how exploration and exploitation strategies contribute to the level of firm performance, but also to its variability. The findings provide an improved understanding of strategic management under economic crisis, with different levels of firm-specific severity.
