Abstract
It is generally accepted that the focus of seruitium amoris is the lover–poet’s experience of servitude, rather than the mistress’s power over him, but for Propertius this paradigm does not entirely fit. Propertius may not exactly focus on Cynthia’s mastery, but she is a more dynamic character than most elegiac puellae and displays some of the masterful behaviour of a true domina and even of a patron. Additionally, Propertius separates the lover–poet’s experience of seruitium amoris from the violence experienced by enslaved people and places the lover–poet in a space between freedom and slavery. Cynthia’s mastery and the exploration of the borderland between freedom and slavery are focal points for examining sociopolitical issues that are important in Propertius’ work, especially the elision of the boundary between the slave and client or lesser amicus.
